The Right Home: the Housing Needs of People with Disabilities
The Right Home: the Housing Needs of People with Disabilities
This joint CIB/DFI social policy report draws from the National Advocacy Service (NAS) and DFI member case studies, from the experiences of the DFI membership, and analysis of data providing a multi-faceted insight into the housing needs of people with disabilities. It compares the experiences of those consulted with the commitments made in the National Housing Strategy for People with a Disability 2011-2016 (extended to 2021), related Local Authority Strategic Plans for Housing People with a Disability and social housing policy generally. Difficulties experienced ranged from a shortage of suitable accommodation, clustering of accommodation units for people with disabilities, and inadequate housing supports, to challenges with the current housing needs assessment system, family concerns and resistance as a barrier, as well as accessing information on housing options. The report outlines a range of measures to address these issues and informs a policy action agenda with particular reference to the implementation of the new National Housing Strategy for Disabled People 2022-2027.
