30 November 2022

The Citizens Information Board welcomes the Government decision made yesterday to extend the Abhaile scheme to the end of 2023.

Abhaile helps people who are in mortgage arrears to find a solution and stay in their homes where possible. Established in 2016, the scheme is accessed through MABS and includes support from a MABS dedicated mortgage adviser as well as legal advice and insolvency advice. To date, more than 19,300 households have received financial advice under the scheme, while more than 28,000 borrowers have been supported by Abhaile in court.

Speaking following the announcement, Fiona Coyne, Chief Executive of the Citizens Information Board, said: "Abhaile provides vital supports to homeowners in mortgage arrears and I am delighted that people across the country will continue to be able to access high-quality advice under the scheme. We look forward to working with the MABS companies to deliver this critical service in 2023."

The Abhaile scheme is funded by the Department of Social Protection and the Department of Justice, and is implemented by the Citizens Information Board, MABS, the Insolvency Service of Ireland, the Legal Aid Board and the Courts Service.

MABS can be contacted on 0818 07 2000, Monday to Friday, 9am to 8pm or go to mabs.ie to find your nearest MABS office.
