Statement by the Citizens Information Board Regarding Volunteers in the Citizens Information Service Companies

The Citizens Information Board (CIB) acknowledges the centrality of volunteers in delivering and supporting CIB-funded services and considers their continued contribution to be vital in ensuring that Citizens Information remains an independent, trusted source of information, advice and advocacy. Nationally, 89 Citizens Information Centres are currently open and remain available to provide information, advice and advocacy.

CIB are aware that the eight regional Citizens Information Service companies met on Tuesday (6th September) as part of their regular schedule of meetings. The issue of volunteers continuing to return to services was discussed and the Chair of the group has written to CIB to propose further engagement to move forward on this issue. CIB will be working with the regional companies as a matter of priority to take action on this.

CIB has also received correspondence from Heather Humphreys TD, Minister for Social Protection, requesting information on changes to the role of volunteers in the Citizens Information Service companies. CIB is preparing a report, which will be issued to the Minister shortly.

In addition, an independent review of the operation of the volunteer programme within Citizens Information Service companies will commence soon to ensure that the programme remains fit-for-purpose and that volunteering in the Citizens Information Service companies is rewarding. This will include an assessment of the Volunteer Strategy and feedback from volunteers.

The Citizens Information Board’s aim, at all times, is to provide the best possible service to the public, and this is our priority.
